Trauma Specialist Counsellor in Pontefract and Online

Therapy that cuts through the noise

A warm and confidential space to work through anxiety, burnout and the patterns that keep you stuck, at a pace that feels right for you. I am Ken, a Masters qualified Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist MBACP 00988492. I work with grief, trauma, anxiety and depression in Pontefract and online. I have chosen to specialise in trauma because it sits at the heart of so much of what we carry, even when we come to counselling for something else.

Why Black Sheep Wellbeing?

Black Sheep is not just a name, it's lived experience. I didn't follow the straight path. I left school early, came back through an Access to Higher Education course, then a BSc (2:1) in Counselling Psychology, then an MA with Merit in Integrative Counselling at Leeds Beckett. I know what it feels like to be the outsider in the room to hold it together, to feel like you have to prove you belong. That feeling of being different is what many of my clients bring too. That is why I work the way I do no judgement, no jargon, no fitting you into a box. Just a safe, honest space where you can be yourself and figure things out at your own pace. If you have ever felt like the black sheep, you will fit right here.

About me

Working Together

I am Ken, founder of Black Sheep Wellbeing and a Masters qualified Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist MA MBACP 00988492. I work with adults who are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, low self esteem, relationship difficulties or simply feeling stuck. Therapy offers a space where you can slow down, be heard and make sense of what is going on without judgement or pressure. My Background Before becoming a therapist I served in the British Army, worked in engineering and supported people in frontline wellbeing roles. Those experiences shaped how I show up in the therapy room. Calm, steady, practical and genuinely understanding of what pressure, responsibility and resilience look like in real life. I know what it means to carry things quietly and keep going even when it feels heavy. How I Work My approach is integrative and pluralistic and I work more directly than most therapists. You have chosen to come to therapy and you are investing your time, energy and money. I take that seriously. I offer structure, guidance and clarity alongside warmth and compassion. Being an integrative counsellor means I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches to shape the work around you. There is no single method or fixed programme. The work is tailored, flexible and responsive to what you need. Sometimes that means exploring your story gently and reflectively. Other times it means being practical, focused and hands on. You will not be left to talk without direction. We will look at what is happening, why it is happening and what might help you move forward. The work is collaborative. You bring your lived experience. I bring clinical training, psychological insight and a willingness to be honest and straightforward when it is helpful.

How I Can Help

Support shaped around you

I offer specialist support for people carrying difficult experiences and emotions. My work is trauma informed, which means we work at your pace with safety at the centre. Trauma For when past experiences still feel present. You might feel on edge, numb, easily triggered or stuck in patterns you cannot explain. Together we make sense of what happened and how it is still affecting you, so you can start to feel safer and more in control. Anxiety For when your mind feels busy, your body feels tense and it is hard to switch off. We look at what is driving the anxiety and what helps you feel calmer and more grounded in everyday life. Depression For when life feels flat, heavy or pointless and it is hard to find energy or motivation. Therapy offers space to explore what is underneath, reconnect with yourself and find steady steps forward. Grief and Loss For when you are living with loss of any kind. Grief does not follow a set timeline. We work through what you are carrying without rushing you to move on or feel differently.

Common questions

How do I know which session is right for me?+

You do not need to decide before we speak. Most people start with the free 20 minute initial chat. We can talk through what you are looking for and whether weekly 50 minute sessions or longer 90 minute trauma focused support would be more helpful. We will decide together and we can review as we go.

Who can access the concession rate?+

I keep a small number of reduced rate spaces for armed forces, serving personnel, veterans, blue light and frontline workers at £45 for 50 minutes. If you need this, just mention it when you book your free chat. If those spaces are full, I will let you know and add you to the waiting list.

How do I book and pay?+

You can book your free 20 minute initial chat through the button on this page. If we decide to work together, we will agree a regular weekly slot. Sessions are paid by bank transfer 24 hours before each session. I will send you all the details after our initial chat.

What is your cancellation policy?+

I require a minimum 24 hour notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. This gives me time to offer the space to someone else. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours notice are charged at the full session fee.
